Inside the helicopter, you connect the transmitter sensor module to the included optical pickup which is mounted just like the magnetic hall-effect sensors for governors. In fact, if you already have a sensor wired into your helicopter, you can use a Y-adaptor to feed the signal into both devices. The optical sensor comes with the RF-TACH device, and is also available separately. The Stator-Gator is a great sensor and works perfectly with the RF-TACH. If you have a Benzin powered helicopter, you may hook it up to that.
The optical pickup may be positioned so that it reads reflective tape from any rotating transmission part. You configure the ratio between the RPM of the part you are measuring in relationship to the main rotor blades, and input this information into the display module. The display module allows a gear ratio of anything between 1.00:1 and 25.00:1 in 0.01 increments.
Helitronix made this tachometer in order to meet several needs. First of all, this tachometer can measure the RPM of a rotor head with ANY NUMBER OF BLADES. It is now easy to measure the RPM of the 2-bladed, 3-bladed, 4-bladed and 5-bladed heads. This tachometer provides an instantaneous RPM reading. Updates are made once per second. You no longer have to hunt around changing the shutter speed of a mechanical device looking for the RPM. Because an onboard pickup is used, the RPM can be measured when the helicopter is flying in ANY attitude, not simply when the rotor blades are easily in view. Finally, one of our favorite parts, is that you can now easily tach your helicopter by yourself. Measuring your RPM is no longer a two person operation.
The range of the system is approximately 50 feet on the ground, and several hundred feet while in the air. The display module is powered from a 9V battery. The sensor module obtains power from your receiver pack. The transmitter module consumes about 30ma. The broadcast frequency is within the unlicensed 900MHz band.
Please Note: The photo of the Wireless RF Tach is a photo of the actual shipping unit. There is no plastic packaging for the display module or transmitter module at this time. We are investigating solutions for cost-effective packaging, but do not have a solution available at this time.
Helitronix is offering the three components as a package for $225 US, plus shipping. Individual components may be purchased separately. You can share one display unit with any number of sensor equipped helicopters.
